You have not known what you are.
You have slumbered upon yourself all your life.
Your eyes have been as much as closed most of the time.
What you have done is already in mockeries.

The mockeries are not you.
Underneath them
And within them,
I see you lurk...

totem

Ever since I watched Inception, I've been racking my brains of what totem to have. Consequently, I remembered this piece of wood, a remnant of a key chain I used to have. I searched for it for days until it finally resurfaced, and with it, a silent amusement of how such a tattered piece of artifact could hold so many memories.

For those of you who haven't seen Inception yet (and those I caught their eyebrows raised on the sound of my message alert tone), a totem is a personal artifact used by the owner to confirm his existence in reality-- that he's not in a dream. Ironically, my totem serves a quite different purpose. Holding it right now reminds me of a dream, a fantasy rather than realism or of concrete reasoning. However, it makes me remember a reality that I once lived in, something real...

I've tried thinking of what would be a good totem for me, but all I could think about is a book. But that's too large to use as a totem! I'm thinking I'll use the jeweler's magnifier my mom gave me years ago, until such time that I can find a better alternative.
